EU is planning a large fine of millions against Google

According to the report, this would be the highest penalty the EU has ever imposed for a breach of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The decision should be officially announced before the summer break. Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has the final say.

Compliance discussions

When asked about the report, the EU Commission said that simply imposing a penalty would not solve the problem for companies and citizens. Therefore, discussions are being held with Google about compliance with the regulations. The Commission takes the enforcement of the DMA very seriously and will not hesitate to take the next steps as soon as possible. A statement from Google was initially not available.

The investigation, which was officially launched in March 2025, is investigating allegations that Google favors its own services in its online search. With the DMA, the EU wants to tighten antitrust law. Corporations with a dominant market position therefore have special obligations to allow competition and not to exclude smaller companies from the market.

At the beginning of May, the EU Commission announced that it had given Google a little more time to address the concerns. A previous proposed solution from the US company was not enough for the supervisors.
