The forces of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who controls eastern Libya, detained the Sumud convoy, which was heading to break the land blockade of the Gaza Strip. Note that the blockade from the Sinai Peninsula is carried out by Egypt.
About 200 activists went on a mission to Gaza, including citizens of Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Poland. The convoy includes ten trucks carrying humanitarian aid and seven ambulances.
According to Italian media publications, activists spent about a week in the area of the city of Sirte, trying to negotiate passage with the authorities of eastern Libya. When this failed, they continued their journey, but their road was blocked by soldiers of the 604th brigade of Haftar’s army, among whom were snipers.
Several activists were arrested. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that among them were two Italian citizens taken to Benghazi. The politician expressed hope that they would soon be allowed to return home.
