YouTube will automatically detect AI-generated videos

YouTube, owned by Google, will automatically detect i content generated by artificial intelligence and will report them to platform users, the company announced Wednesday.

This decision reverses the previous policy of requiring video creators to self-report the use of generative AI tools.

“If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant use of photorealistic AI, we will automatically apply a label,” YouTube said in a post.

The latest attempts of AI video platform generative technology dates back to 2024, when it asked creators to report content in which they had used this technology.

Since then, considerable progress has been made in producing photorealistic images and videos, with widely available AI models such as Google’s Veo 3.1 and Seedance from Bytedance, TikTok’s parent company.

Creators will be able to dispute new reports if they believe their content has been unfairly labeled as AI-generatedYouTube clarified.

The platform added that the reports will have no impact on its algorithm for recommending videos to users.

Other platforms and social networks that have recently introduced automatic reporting of AI-generated content include Spotify, the music streaming service.

Many online spaces are awash with AI-generated images, video or audio, which are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from human creations as the tools become more sophisticated.
