La Jornada: Talks begin today with the US on the T-MEC

This Wednesday, talks between Mexico and the United States formally begin as part of the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), in a first round of meetings that will last until Friday, May 29 in Mexican territory.

Until the closing of this edition, the official negotiating agenda and the topics to be discussed had not been announced. However, the social communication area of ​​the Ministry of Economy reported that the details would be announced this Wednesday.

Secretary Marcelo Ebrard confirmed the start of these talks during the presentation of foreign direct investment figures for the first quarter last Monday, and highlighted that after the phase in Mexico, the Mexican delegation must travel to Washington for a second round, the dates of which have yet to be defined.

Ebrard specified that the Mexican proposal was to have formal conversations before July 1, so that each country could present its vision before that date. He warned that postponing progress could generate uncertainty, although he anticipated that the negotiations will not have a quick closure, given that the T-MEC covers digital trade, intellectual property, labor, environmental, financial and customs provisions, in addition to tariffs.

Regarding the agenda of the meeting, the official indicated that he was awaiting confirmation from the US side.
