“The president is very clear about it”: a former PSOE activist involves Pedro Sánchez in maneuvers to stop the investigations against him

The Central Operational Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard has been collecting evidence for months about a possible plot organized from within the PSOE to discredit prosecutors, judges and police who were investigating party members or the government.

“The president” that Díez alludes to would be none other than President Pedro Sánchez. From the Moncloa Palace, however, they deny that the head of the government was aware of these alleged maneuvers.

Meanwhile, Pedro Sánchez looks the other way and the signals he emits have only one direction: to continue leading the progressive coalition government and without bringing forward the elections, scheduled for next year.

In an event of the Economic Circle of Catalonia, the Spanish president assured on Wednesday that, at the end of the summer, he plans to present the General State Budgets for 2027, something that he did not do this year because he was not going to get the majority of Congress to approve them. Spain has been living with extended budgets since 2023.

“Throughout this month we are going to update the macro table with the objective of approving them with the rest of the parliamentary forces in the Cortes Generales,” said Sánchez. And he defined them as “more ambitious budgets, even more social and even more responsible from a fiscal point of view.”

But the investigation into the alleged “PSOE sewers” ​​reveals chats and audios that the Socialist Party will have to deny or clarify, as demanded by the political forces that supported the last re-election of Pedro Sánchez.

“I’m not here for anything other than cleaning,” Díez is heard saying in a meeting with Francisco Martínez, former number two in the Ministry of the Interior during the Popular Party (PP) government of Mariano Rajoy, to whom she would have offered judicial benefits or favors, in the PP corruption case that involves him, in exchange for “dirty laundry” from those who intended to investigate the socialists or Sánchez’s entourage.

“I need four things that allow me two impacts,” requests the former activist who used to present herself as the person chosen by the PSOE for this “cleaning” task.

Díez, whose work would have been compensated with party funds, would respond to “the boss,” as she refers in her messages to who is supposed to be the former organizational secretary of the PSOE, Santos Cerdán.

Cerdán was removed from his position and from the party last year when it was discovered, on the other hand, that he would be part of a network, together with the former Minister of Transport, José Luis Abalos, that collected bribes in exchange for awarding public works to private companies.

He was in preventive detention between June and November 2025 and is now awaiting trial.

According to Judge Santiago Pedraz, who is instructing the investigation to see if it gathers sufficient evidence to open a judicial process for the so-called “Leire case”, the former secretary of the socialist organization would be the one who made the “strategic” decisions. And he would have paid the former militant for her “cleaning tasks” about 4,000 euros per month with PSOE money.

In the reports of the Central Operational Unit it appears that Leire Díez would have met, at least three times, with the director of the Civil Guard, Mercedes González, whom I would have asked his agents not to be too proactive in the investigations against the PSOE nor against the government.

“Let them stand in profile,” Díez reportedly asked the director of the Civil Guard, which depends on the Ministry of the Interior.

“I have not known of any action that could be aimed at undermining the work of the State security forces and bodies,” said the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

“Simply because, if they had known her, they would not have tolerated her,” he said.

The Minister of Territorial Policy, Angel Víctor Torres, defends the innocence of the PSOE: “There have been people who have been able to use our name, the name of our political organization, in an absolutely fraudulent manner, and therefore, once all this is proven, we will act with all force,” said Torres.

Between 2011 and 2014, María Leire Díez Castro was deputy mayor of the PSOE in the municipality of Vega de Pas, a town of less than a thousand inhabitants, in Cantabria. She also served as press officer for a Spanish public nuclear fuel company and director of Philately and Institutional Relations for Correos, another public company.

In his networks he defined himself as “socialist, journalist, columnist, with more and more desire to say things how I feel them.” And a year ago it hit the front pages of the newspapers when the online The Confidential published some audios in which Díez spoke with a businessman involved in a case for alleged corruption in hydrocarbons to whom He asked him for some dirty cloth with which he could stain Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Balas, head of the Economic Crime Department of the UCO.

“I don’t need everyone now. I need Balas,” Díez was heard saying. “It’s important that it be documented. As long as there are four documented things, it’s fine for me. There doesn’t need to be 250 presumptions.”

In June of last year, when this audio became public, Díez called a press conference in which he said he was working on an investigative book.

“I am a member of the Socialist Party until I process my voluntary withdrawal, but I also have a degree in Social and Information Sciences. I am a journalist -Leire Díez read her statement-.
