Hezbollah rejects new ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon

The fragility of the process directly affects the truce between Iran and the United States. This is because Tehran demands that the ceasefire in Lebanon be included in peace negotiations with Washington.

The agreement between Israel and Lebanon had the condition that Hezbollah end both its attacks and its operations in southern Lebanese territory. Hezbollah is an Iranian-allied terrorist group that operates in Lebanon independently of the government. According to military analysts, it has more weapons and resources than the Lebanese army.

In an official statement, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said a “solid ceasefire” would only be possible after receiving “internal responses with a green light.”

Hezbollah stated that it did not formally participate in the agreement and confirmed that it had fired rockets at Israeli troops in the border region south of Lebanon. After the attack, the Israeli military issued a warning to local residents not to return to the border region.

UN peacekeeper killed in attacks in southern Lebanon

On the Israeli side, a bombing in eastern Lebanon left at least three dead. In another attack, the fatal victim was a driver. More deaths were recorded in southern Lebanon during the early hours of the morning, shortly before the agreement brokered by Trump. In this bombing, the origin of which was not identified, two people were injured and a UN peacekeeping soldier, of Serbian origin, died.

Israeli security forces stated that this attack that killed the peacekeeper was carried out by Hezbollah. “The analysis of the trajectory of the projectiles clearly indicates that the attack was committed by the terrorist organization,” states an official note from Tel-Aviv.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, which coordinates the actions of the UN peacekeeping mission in the region, did not comment on the origin of the shots. Even so, the entity reported an increase in the number of “impacts” in the southern region of the country.
