“Memorial”, “OVD-Info”, “Memorial Israel” are included in the list of terrorists in the Russian Federation

Rosfinmonitoring has added Memorial and more than 30 organizations associated with it to the list of terrorists and extremists, Radio Liberty reports. Among other things, this means that Russian citizens and foreign citizens located in the Russian Federation who donated money to Memorial’s activities may be persecuted by the authorities “for supporting terrorism.”

The Rosfinmonitoring website states that the list of terrorists and extremists includes organizations associated with Memorial in different countries of the world, including Memorial of Ukraine (Kharkiv and Odessa human rights group), the Czech branch of the International Historical and Educational Human Rights Society Memorial, Memorial Germany, Memorial France, the Israeli Memorial Society, as well as relevant organizations in Switzerland, Poland, Italy, Lithuania, Belarus and others.

Along with Memorial organizations, the list also includes OVD-Info, Revolt Center and the Perm-36 Museum.

Let us recall that in April of this year, the Supreme Court of Russia, at the request of the Ministry of Justice, declared the research and human rights organization Memorial “extremist” and banned its activities in the Russian Federation. The court hearing was held behind closed doors.

Memorial emerged in the late 1980s as an organization for the study of political repression. One of its organizers was academician Andrei Sakharov. Soon, Memorial became the largest center for the study of political repression in the USSR and modern Russia, which also dealt with the protection of human rights.

At the end of 2021, the Moscow City Court decided to liquidate the Memorial human rights center. The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation made a similar decision regarding International Memorial. The liquidation was initiated by the prosecutor’s office, which accused the organizations of violating the law on “foreign agents.” In May 2023, the international association “Memorial” was established in Geneva; its members included 15 organizations of the “International Memorial” liquidated by the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation. The Russian authorities declared this organization “undesirable” in 2026.
