Curious outbidding competition at Real Madrid: Before the presidential election scheduled for Sunday, the two candidates are making bold personnel promises: Incumbent Florentino Pérez, who provoked the extraordinary election, wants to bring back former Real coach José Mourinho as Álvaro Arbeloa’s successor if he wins. Mourinho’s current club, Benfica, told the Lisbon Stock Exchange that Pérez had agreed to pay a transfer fee of 15 million euros. Pérez also wants to sign former Bundesliga defender Ibrahima Konaté for a free transfer after his departure from Liverpool. Pérez challenger Enrique Riquelme promised an even greater caliber: He declared that top scorer Erling Haaland would come to Real if Riquelme was elected president. Haaland’s club Manchester City and his father vehemently rejected this.
