US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in the hearing held in the Senate on June 3 that Russia will not be able to achieve its goals in Ukraine, and the Russian side “may never be able to achieve militarily the goals that they are currently putting forward during the negotiations.”
“Ukrainians are not only fighting bravely, but also fighting effectively,” Rubio said in his speech before the senators.
At a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Wednesday, the US Secretary of State also warned of a “real” risk of an escalation of the war in Ukraine, stressing that the Ukrainian army is demonstrating its ability to strike deep into Russian territory.
Rubio also said that “very soon” information will be released about the $400 million that Congress approved as military aid to Ukraine, but whose transfer is still being delayed at the Pentagon level.
Rubio’s comments came on the same day that Ukrainian military drones struck energy infrastructure in Russia’s second-largest city, St. Petersburg, on the opening day of an annual economic conference there. Kiev presented the attack as a response to a series of mass strikes carried out by Russia on Tuesday, which killed more than 20 people.
“This is one of those moments that reminds why it is important to try to end this war, if it is possible, because the danger of escalation is real and much higher than two years ago,” the US Secretary of State emphasized.
