Boom! On Thursday the weather is making noise. The wind turns into a raging storm. Even tornadoes are possible. Lightning flashes, thunder rumbles. And clouds form bizarre shapes – it will be a real THURSDAY. If you can, it’s best to stay at home.

“Today’s weather situation is tough,” says DWD colleague Thorsten Kaluza. “From midday onwards, some strong thunderstorms will develop from the west, which can develop significant momentum of their own due to the wind conditions.” Unlike a normal summer thunderstorm, these thunderstorms are “more dynamic, more organized and longer-lasting,” says the meteorologist.

Kaluza warns: “It is urgent to keep an eye on the warning situation” – for example on the DWD website as well as in the warning apps. This advice applies not only to, but especially to, outdoor activities. “Also pay attention to the recommendations for action given in order to get a better feel for the potential danger in case of doubt.”

The storm is raging in these regions

The federal states of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are particularly affected. Add to that storm on the edge of the Alps in southeast Bavaria with heavy rain and Hagelbut less storm.

Graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung told BILD: “It will be most violent between the North Sea and North Rhine-Westphalia. Hurricane-like gusts of up to 116 km/h can occur there. This increases the likelihood that tornadoes will form locally.”

However, the weather expert reassures: “The chance is very small. You can’t predict something like this with exact location – and if they form in the open, we don’t even notice.”

At high altitudes in the low mountain ranges, stormy winds become a danger. Many trees already have leaves and offer a large target area for the gusts. In such situations, entire trees often fall over or large branches break off. Caution is advised, for example on the Brocken in the Harz or on the Kahler Asten in the Rothaargebirge (Hochsauerlandkreis). Despite the public holiday, hikes should be postponed in six federal states (Corpus Christi).
