Car crashes into school group: 4 dead, several injured in the Netherlands

Vogelwaarde (Netherlands) – A school trip ends in a nightmare: a driver crashed into a group of elementary school students cycling in the Dutch province of Zeeland. The driver is said to have continued driving straight ahead in a curve and hit the group of students on the bike path, the broadcaster NOS reported. Four people died, including three children and an adult caregiver. One of the children was initially taken to hospital with serious injuries, but later succumbed to his injuries, writes the Dutch media Omroep Zeeland.

The Accident happened around 12.30 p.m. near the village of Vogelwaarde, not far from the Belgian border. The group consisted of 14 children from a primary school and two accompanying adults. They were on their way to a school camp.

Besides the Kill Four other children were seriously injured and taken to special clinics, including the Ghent University Hospital, Antwerp and the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

Sea Broadcasting Zeeland One person was arrested at the scene of the accident. Police initially did not want to say whether it was the driver or why the person was arrested. The investigation is ongoing.

After the accident, the uninjured children were cared for in the Vogelwaarde village community center. The mayors of Hulst and Terneuzen were there. Prime Minister Rob Jetten reacted with shock. “What should have been a highlight for every child ends in a nightmare.” The State Secretary for Education, Judith Tielen, also commented on the social media platform X. “My thoughts are with the relatives, families, friends and classmates of the victims as well as the school staff,” she wrote. The cause of the accident is still unclear.
