Gaudí, the genius between nature and architecture

Antoni Gaudi he didn’t simply design buildings; as architect he redefined the very concept of space, eliminating the straight line in favor of curved and organic shapes. Walking through Barcelona the impact of his works is immediate: structures that seem alive, born from the mind of a designer that the academic environment of the time struggled to catalogue.

Born in Catalonia in 1852, Gaudí spent a childhood marked by health problems that forced him to take long periods of rest. It is in this isolation that he develops a geometric sensitivity and meticulous observation of nature. For him, natural forms are not simple decorations, but perfect structural solutions: tree trunks become inclined columns and human bones inspire arches capable of distributing weights in a revolutionary way. When he graduates from Barcelona School of Architecture in 1878, the director of the school says of him: “I don’t know whether we gave the title to a madman or a genius, time will tell.” Time, definitely, has given its answer.

The turning point with Güell

The turning point in his life came thanks to the meeting with Eusebi Güella very rich industrialist who senses the potential of that unconventional man and practically gives him carte blanche (and an almost unlimited budget). This is how masterpieces like the Park Güell and the Palace Güellwhere the color explodes thanks to the technique of brokenthat ingenious mosaic made of fragments of ceramic and recycled glass. Gaudí transforms waste into pure art.

The Sagrada Família project

From 1883 his life was almost entirely identified with the building site Holy Family. In recent years the commitment turns into total isolation: he moves to live inside the temple workshop, neglecting the personal aspect and dedicating every resource to the project. Aware of the complexity of the work and the time needed to complete it, he used to remember that his “client” was in no hurry.

Death and accident

In June 1926, at the age of 73, Gaudí was hit by a tram while on his way to the church of Sant Felipe Neri. Due to his extremely modest clothing, passers-by and rescuers mistook him for a poor man, delaying his transport to hospital. He dies three days later.

Burial in the Sagrada Família

The architect is buried in the crypt of Holy Familythe unfinished work that continues to define the visual identity of Barcelona.

The architect’s path to sainthood

April 14, 2025 Pope Francis approved the decree recognizing the “heroic virtues” of Antoni Gaudiofficially declaring it Venerable. It is the second step on the path to sainthood established by Catholic Church. After being considered “Servant of God”, the recognition of venerability attests that the architect lived Christian values in an extraordinary and profound way, so much so that he was often defined, even in Vatican circles, “thearchitect of God“. For possible beatification it will now be necessary to recognize a miracle attributed to his intercession.
