Spanish producers ask Culture to call them to review the text of the Cinema Law

The representative associations of independent production grouped in PAP -AECINE, DIBOOS, PROA, PIAF-MAPA and PROFILM- have celebrated that the Ministry of Culture has “resumed the processing of the Law on Cinema and Audiovisual Culture“but they request the”urgent opening“of a process of dialogue with the sector and review of the text before its final processing.

In this sense, they request a working meeting to find out the current status of the text and any planned modifications; establishing a technical consultation calendar with verifiable deadlines; and the opening of a specific working group on the definition of independent producer and updating the articles to the reality of the sector in 2026.

“The parliamentary reactivation of the Cinema Law was not known through the usual channels. The signatory associations learned of its imminent processing through the ordinary monitoring of the parliamentary agenda,” the producers have stated in a statement in which “they regret not having been informed or summoned in advance“. “That dialogue is invoked at the parliamentary level and not before, with those who know the sector inside out, is not just a problem of forms: It is a problem of method”, they add.

A few days ago, Minister Ernest Urtasun demanded in the Congress of Deputies that the PP withdraw the amendment to the entirety that it registered in the Chamber. “They are dedicated not to culture, but to a completely destructive opposition that is of no use in this country. You now have a golden opportunity to correct that course. “Are you going to withdraw the amendment in its entirety and are you going to sit down and work with the rest of the groups in favor of Spanish cinema?” asked Urtusun.

Thus, AECINE, DIBOOS, PROA, PIAF-MAPA and PROFILM do not oppose the processing of a new Cinema Law, in fact “they demand it.” But they demand a law that works, and for it to work it has to be built with the knowledge of those who are going to live it,” they added.
