Very close to the second division: Hertha BSC women won 4-1 in Saarbrücken

The women of Hertha BSC have taken a decisive step closer to the second Bundesliga. The Berliners, champions of the Regionalliga Northeast, clearly won the play-off first leg against the Southwest champions 1. FC Saarbrücken on Saturday. In front of 3,924 spectators in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigspark, the guests won 4:1 (2:0).

It was a deserved success for the Berliners, which became apparent early on. Elfie Wellhausen, Hertha’s most successful goalscorer of the regional league season, gave her team the lead in the third minute. And just four minutes later, Johanna Seifert increased the score to 2-0.

In the entire season, the Saarbrücken women had not lost a single game in their regional league season and had only conceded a total of five goals – on Saturday against Hertha there were four in just 90 minutes. Svenja Poock scored just a few seconds into the second half to make it 3-0.

The hosts were able to reduce the deficit 20 minutes before the end thanks to Lara Martin. But Hertha appeared too dominant overall for 1. FC Saarbrücken to have any serious hope of turning things around. Especially since Sari Saeland extended Berlin’s lead to three goals just four minutes after the consolation goal.

On Sunday in a week’s time (2 p.m.), Hertha can secure the women’s team’s first-ever promotion to the second division in the play-off second leg in the amateur stadium – before there is another duel between Saarbrücken and Berlin in August. Then Hertha’s men will play in the first round of the DFB Cup in Ludwigspark.
