Trump, new attack on Meloni and “ungrateful” Italy: the message

Donald Trump’s new attack on Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and on Italy. “After the trillions of dollars” that the United States “has spent on NATO, Italy and its Prime Minister would not even dream of getting involved with the Islamic Republic of Iran and its very serious nuclear threat. For decades we have defended them but when they were put to the test, they were unable to defend us and the rest of the world. Not good!”, writes the President of the United States on Truth Social.

Trump’s attacks started on June 19 with statements in an interview with La7. The American president claimed that the prime minister had “begged” him for a photo at the G7 in Evian and subsequently, to NBCnews, he accused her of having been “absent on the Strait of Hormuz. She was a fan of mine, but I don’t want her anymore”. Meloni immediately responded on social media, branding the phrases about the G7 outburst as “totally invented” and saying she was “appalled” by the American leader’s attitude towards the allies.

The second episode aired on June 20th. Trump argued that the prime minister “is doing badly in Italy, perhaps because she left the United States, a country that truly loves and protects Italy, when it came to denying Iran from obtaining or developing a nuclear weapon.” Meloni responded by calling the White House number 1’s continued attacks “senseless”, recalling that his popularity “depends on his ability to defend the national interest” and that the use of military bases is regulated by agreements that Italy “does not violate”. The Prime Minister closed by highlighting that she would no longer return to the topic because she believes “in the unity of the West” and believes that this clash “is not up to our task”. Today, Sunday 21 June, Trump’s new post.
