Iran suspends negotiations with US after Trump threats

This Sunday (21), Iran interrupted negotiations with the United States that were being held in Switzerland. The decision comes after recent statements by US President Donald Trump, who threatened to intensify military actions if Hezbollah, an ally of Tehran, does not interrupt its activities in Lebanon.

According to the state agency IRNA, the country’s delegation left the place of negotiations. “The delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran left the negotiations site,” the state media outlet reported.

The talks had been formalized a few days earlier, after the signing of the so-called Islamabad Memorandum, on the 17th. The agreement provided for the opening of dialogue between the parties and included, among other points, the cessation of clashes on different fronts, including Lebanese territory.

Iran announced closure of the Strait of Hormuz

The diplomatic crisis worsened after the Iranian government announced, on Saturday (20), the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main maritime routes for global oil transport. Tehran justified the measure as a response to Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon.

On his Truth Social account, Trump stated that “Iran must immediately stop its highly paid agents in Lebanon from causing trouble. If they don’t, we will hit Iran very hard again, just like we did last week, only harder!!!”

In an interview with the American broadcaster Fox News, Trump reacted with new warnings. The president stated that if Iran goes ahead with blocking the strait, the country would face severe consequences. “They would no longer have a country and would not even be able to return,” he declared, referring to the Iranian delegation present in Switzerland.
