French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the country’s naval forces stopped and inspected an oil tanker off the coast of Sicily, which, according to Paris, is part of Russia’s “shadow fleet”. Moscow uses it to export oil and gas, as well as to circumvent Western sanctions.
Macron noted in a post published on his social network pages that the operation was carried out on Tuesday.
“This new operation against the ‘shadow fleet’, which follows a similar operation carried out by Great Britain a few days ago, shows the determination of the Europeans,” Macron wrote.
“We will not allow the “shadow fleet” to circumvent sanctions and finance Russia’s military operations,” the French president added.
In a video published by President Macron, it is seen how French marines descend from helicopters on the Deliver oil tanker.
According to the French authorities, Paris already has at least five tank to detain or subject to inspection, classifying them as Russia’s “shadow fleet”. We are talking about old ships that Russia uses to transport oil and gas, bypassing Western sanctions.
Moscow considers these actions illegal and has repeatedly criticized the actions of Western countries against the “shadow fleet”.
