Cloudflare will block mixed AI trackers on websites with ads by default starting in September

Cloudflare has announced measures to curb the use of mixed trackers on websites and, as of September 15the default setting will allow search, but block training and use of agents on pages that contain ads.

The company has shared its intention to level the playing field between AI companies, who are “redefining what it means to be visible in an agentic age,” and traditional search firms.

This is because, at a time when there is already more bot traffic on the internet than from humans, Cloudflare has put on the table how artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming the new interface to access information and make purchases online, which “changes the rules on how content is discovered”, as explained in a statement on their website.

Until now, web traffic was indicative of whether users saw ads on a website or paid for their subscriptions, however, with AI models, what visit websites on behalf of users, the landscape is changing.

“Most website owners want their content in AI systems. But Businesses that rely on advertising or subscriptions are threatened by AI systems who train with their content without offering them any compensation,” clarified the company, which aims to balance this relationship fairly for websites and AI companies.

“We believe that if you are a company that wants your content to be part of AI systems, we should make the process as simple and efficient as possible. But if you are a company that doesn’t want that, you should have the necessary tools to restrict AI access“, he added.

In this sense, it has announced new default classificationsenhanced customer analytics, and AI-powered searches optimized for ensure creators “receive compensation” when its content serves as the basis for a response.

CLASSIFICATIONS FOR BLOCKING MIXED WEB TRACKERS

These new rankings are feature-based to help website owners and AI companies optimize visibility, efficiency, and monetization. Specifically, They will block mixed-use web trackers by default. That is, crawlers that index websites for search engines and at the same time act as AI agents and trainers.

This decision is because mixed trackers They hurt both website owners and AI companies transparent – those that clearly separate and label their bots according to their purpose – since they mix search, the use of agents and training without offering compensation to anyone. “This forces content owners to choose between being visible in an agentic era and giving away your most valuable content without receiving any compensation in return“.

Likewise, the mixed crawlers that do not allow website owners to choose between the search, the use of agents and training “will be blocked on all pages with ads“, the company has stated.

These classifications join the tools announced last year to manage and monetize the access of AI bots to websites, which must now “go further and act faster” to ensure a sustainable ecosystem.

However, Cloudflare has clarified that these measures are will begin to apply on September 15 this year for all users who use the free version and who have not previously modified their settings.

The company has also announced that will launch a new dashboard for monetized content called Attribution Business Insightwith improvements to prevent data asymmetry and thus prevent content owners from “trading blindly.”

Following this line, it has also renewed its payment tool for trackingdesigned so creators can charge AI companies to track their content. Now, this option has been transformed to a pay per use modelso that creators get paid when their content “actually generates value,” not just when it is recovered.
