The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) has reported the death of an 85-year-old German citizen who was in custody after being detained in August 2025 accused of attempting to enter the country illegally through the southern border in the state of Texas.
ICE has indicated in a statement that the man, identified as Adrian Andreas Florian, has died in Harlingen, Texas, where he had had to receive medical treatment since November after suffering stomach and cognitive problems, as well as hypertension. His death was declared on June 24 by doctors and, currently, an autopsy is pending.
The United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had launched a series of judicial proceedings against him shortly after he was taken into ICE custody.
“His relatives have already been notified of his death,” the text states. “ICE is committed to ensuring that all people in custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments. Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment of arrival and throughout the stay,” the agency has assured.
In addition, he has emphasized that all people in his custody “receive medical evaluations” within 12 hours of their arrival at each detention center. “At no time during detention is emergency care denied to a detained foreigner,” he assured.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, recently asked North American authorities for immediate measures to prevent new deaths of people in ICE custody, after pointing out “alarming” death tolls, at least 18 people, in ICE detention centers so far this year.
