Roxana Guzmán, the journalist from Mexico who recorded the dramatic moment of her kidnapping, was found dead

Mexican authorities found the journalist’s body Roxana Guzmankidnapped in the state of Veracruz a month ago, when two hooded people, one of them with a rifle, violently broke into her house and took her away.

The victim, whose full name is Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírezwas the director of the news portal Southeast Information Pulse that reported on news in the dangerous state of Veracruz.

The governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle, reported this Monday at a press conference that after the capture of a man allegedly involved in the kidnapping, a lifeless body was located.

Eight people were arrested for the crime of homicideamong them four men who were working as municipal police officers at the time of the crime, the prosecutor’s office confirmed.

The agents “provided resources, food and logistical support in the operations of the criminal group” that kidnapped the communicator, according to the investigations.

The press worker had been working in the south of the state for six months, during which time she opened the digital portal, which operated mainly through social networks and with local news.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries to practice journalism, according to the organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF), which has more than 150 communicators murdered since 1994.

Guzmán was kidnapped on June 2 in the municipality of Nanchital, a town of only about 30,000 inhabitants, which is considered highly dangerous for practicing journalism.

In the images, which were shared on X and Facebook, two hooded people are seen with long weapons who hit, with a sledgehammer, an aluminum door. After forcing entry, they point their weapons at the occupants of the house, while a man tries to calm them down.

“There is a minor,” a man shouts from inside the home. However, they subdue them and cut off the recording.

After the homicide, Guzmán Ramírez left the state of Veracruz for safety reasons, but returned some time later. It was then when he founded the digital medium.

In 2019, the journalist had requested the intervention of the State Commission for the Attention and Protection of Journalists (CEAPP) for a alleged harassment of a municipal official of Nanchital.

The Mexican organization Communication and Information for Women (CIMAC) expressed “deep concern” about the shocking episode. In the statement they pointed out the “serious violation of their human rights and freedom of expression.”

Mexico appears as the second deadliest nation for the press and second place in disappearances of communicators, according to the 2025 Balance of Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Among the several names of missing journalists are Miguel Ángel Anaya Castillo (in 2025), Juan Carlos Hinojosa Viveros (2023); and among those murdered are Avisack Douglas Coronado (2025), José Luis Gamboa Arenas (2022), Yessenia Mollinedo Falconi (2022), and Pedro Pablo Kumul (2022).
