Players who were without a contract have been allowed to sign new contracts since Wednesday, and significant changes have already taken place during Thursday.
According to Finns, the most significant news of Thursday evening was the defender Olli Määtä31, transferred to the Minnesota Wild.
In addition to the Finn, Määtä’s former club Calgary Flames sent a striker Blake Colemanin to Minnesota. The Canadian club will pay half of Coleman’s $4.9 million salary.
Calgary got a defender in exchange Jake Middleton as well as second round booking 2029, third round booking 2027 and fourth round booking 2028.
Määtta moved from Utah Mammoth to Calgary in the middle of last season. He is a two-time Stanley Cup winner.
From Finns also a defender Ville Heinola and the attacker Joel Kiviranta changed clubs.
In the night between Wednesday and Thursday, it was reported that Kiviranta will return to his old club, the Dallas Stars. He managed to play for the Stars for four seasons until he moved to the ranks of the Colorado Avalanche in 2023.
Kiviranta’s contract with Stars is one year and worth one million dollars.

Striker Kasperi Kapanen signed a contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. The contract is for one year and is worth 2.6 million dollars.
NHL:n all-time top scorer Alexander Ovechkin signed a one-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals. The contract is worth 4.25 million dollars.
If the Russian plays at least 10 NHL games in the upcoming season, he will receive a bonus of $4.75 million. In that case, he would earn 9 million dollars during the season.
Ovechkin has scored 929 goals in the NHL. He passed Wayne Gretzky as the league’s all-time leading scorer in 2025.
Alexander Ovechkin is the NHL’s all-time leading scorer.
Other significant NHL news on Thursday was the goalie by Frederik Andersen transfer to Edmonton Oilers, of John Carlson transfer to Tampa Bay Lightning and forward Nick Folignon contract extension with the Minnesota Wild.
