Israeli plane lands at northernmost civilian airport for the first time

Arkia Airlines, together with the travel company Spirit World Productions, completed a unique project, within the framework of which four special flights were carried out to the North Pole region. According to the organizers, for the first time in the history of the State of Israel, an Israeli plane landed at the civilian airport closest to the North Pole, AviationNewsIL reports.

The flights were carried out on an Airbus A320 aircraft of the Arkiya airline. Along the way, there was a technical landing in Helsinki for refueling. The final destination was Longyearbyen Airport, the world’s northernmost airport serving regular flights. It is the air gateway to the Spitsbergen (Svalbard) archipelago in the Arctic Ocean.

Spirit said that the project was the next step in the implementation of their strategy to open new exotic destinations for Israeli tourists. Organizers said the successful flights demonstrated Arkiya’s high level of training and logistical capabilities when operating complex flights to remote areas of the world.

Arkiya CEO Oz Barlowitz called the joint project with Spirit “another example of the airline’s high professional level.” “We are proud to be able to carry out historic and unique aviation projects alongside our regular operations and once again prove that we can successfully implement the most complex missions anywhere in the world,” he said.
