Louis CK got Netflix to support him again nine years after the sex scandal

American comedian Louis CK (Louis Székelyb. 1967) withdrew from the public eye in 2017 when The New York Times article gave incriminating details about his behavior with women. Louis CK admitted that he acted wrongly in exposing women to watch his masturbation and apologized for it. The case became one of the Me Too movement’s most visible scandalous revelations.

At the same time, the streaming company Netflix also ended its cooperation with Louis CK after publishing this earlier in the same year 2017-comedy special.

Now however, Netflix has returned to the collaboration. In May, Louis CK appeared at the Netflix is a Joke festival organized by Netflix, and on June 30, Netflix released the comedian’s latest comedy special Ridiculous.

of Variety in the interview at the beginning of May, head of Netflix’s stand-up programs Robbie Praw justified the continued collaboration with Louis CK’s recent success as a comedian. He justifies the release of the new comedy special with freedom of choice: the audience is free to decide whether to watch the program or not.

Louis CK has really been able to restart his career after the scandal nine years ago. Svenska Dagbladet columnist Good luck Eder-Ekman refers too to him as a “Me too survivor”, so not in the usual sense as a victim of sexual harassment who has survived his trials, but on the contrary as a harasser who has been able to continue his career after the scandal.

Louis CK started performing in stand-up clubs back in 2018 and has since then steadily increased his popularity with tours and self-published comedy specials that he has distributed through his website.

According to Variety it’s this independence from streaming junk or other distributors that has allowed the career to continue, and its success has directly led to a new partnership with Netflix, as Robbie Praw’s comments suggest.

Louis CK however, cannot escape his past completely. Ridiculous– is constantly referred to in criticisms of the program. At the same time, Louis CK’s chance to continue his career is reflected in the scandal.

Few deny his talent as a comedian, but most also deny him genuine remorse for past actions. He referred to them in his first post-scandal comedy special Sincerely Louis C.K. (2020), but not much in the programs after that, not even in the new one Ridiculous– in the special.
