Barça accelerates the arrival of Aleksander Sekulic to the bench

Barça basketball is finalizing the incorporation of Slovenian coach Aleksander Sekulic as the new first team coach, an operation that is pending the final details and that, if no setbacks arise, could become official at the end of this week.

As Europa Press has learned, Sekulic, Slovenia’s coach and one of the most prominent coaches in European basketball, is the one chosen by the Blaugrana club to head the new sports project after the departure of Xavi Pascual.

The coach has already visited Barcelona in recent days and has maintained the first contacts with officials of the entity before the imminent final closing of the agreement, which is scheduled for the end of the week barring last-minute impediments.

The decision comes after Barça definitively ruled out the incorporation of the Italian Paolo Galbiati, an option that the club explored in recent weeks, but whose operation ended up being frustrated when an agreement was not reached with Baskonia, his current club. From that moment on, the entity focused its efforts on Sekulic, now considered the priority to occupy the ‘culer’ bench.

The Slovenian coach will take on the challenge of leading a profound sporting reconstruction after a new season below expectations. The club’s intention is to set up a renewed team, with a defined identity and prepared to compete again for titles in both the ACB competitions and the Euroleague.

The election of Sekulic is part of the new sporting direction that Barça is preparing, with agreed planning for the coming seasons and a determined commitment to strengthening the competitiveness of the squad. The future sports director, Xevi Pujol, will also play a relevant role in this process, whose incorporation is scheduled for the beginning of next August.

While the details of the agreement with Pujol are being finalized, due to problems in the negotiation of his departure with Kosner Baskonia, Barça hopes to be able to close the hiring of the Slovenian coach as soon as possible – with the approval of Pujol – so that he can begin to prepare for the new season from the beginning of the preseason and lead a project called to open a new stage at the Palau Blaugrana.
