La Jornada: The number of Mexicana passengers increased by 42% during the World Cup period

Santa Lucía, Méx., The number of passengers of the Mexican airline increased 42 percent during the period in which Mexico City hosted one of the matches of the World Cup, highlighted Leobardo Ávila, general director of the company.

“From the beginning of June to July 5, when we were doing the analysis, Mexicana increased the number of passengers by 42 percent compared to that same period last year,” he commented in an interview, after inaugurating the Mexico-Chihuahua state route from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA).

“We increase capacities to generate greater connectivity in the World Cup series,” he mentioned. With the new route announced this morning, Mexicana has 17 different routes from the AIFA, to which will be added next Monday the 20th, that of Hermosillo, Sonora, and on Monday the 27th, that of the Bajío airport, in Guanajuato. On June 4, the airline inaugurated the one in Acapulco and on July 6 the one in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.

In June 2023, a decree was issued establishing that the Mexican brand will be the State airline.

“It is a new company where the Mexican brand is acquired and the company is acquiring new aircraft from the Embraer company (from Brazil) of the type 195 and 190,” he explained.

These aircraft have a capacity of 132 and 108 passengers, respectively, and belong to the E2 family.

Since December 26, 2023, when it began operating, Mexicana has transported more than one million 100 thousand passengers. “This has led to month-over-month growth of approximately 23 percent,” said Ávila. Until now, 686 people work in the company. “They are collaborators for highly specialized aeronautical technical personnel and we are also training them to grow,” said the director. Regarding new hires, Ávila explained that Mexicana is in a process of incorporating more technical and aeronautical personnel as it receives more aircraft.

The new route from Edomex to Chihuahua will be carried out in two schedules in the afternoon, five days a week. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

From AIFA to Chihuahua the flight takes off at 4:10 p.m. and lands at 6:05 p.m.

Meanwhile, flights from Chihuahua to AIFA are scheduled to take off at 6:45 p.m. and arrive at 8:50 p.m.

At the inauguration organized by the Secretariat of National Defense, Ávila commented that Mexicana is writing a new chapter, consolidating its commitment to bringing together the regions that drive the development of Mexico.

He added that the new route represents a bridge of opportunities between the center and the north of the country. “Each new route is a catalyst for progress that brings markets closer together and contributes to the prosperity of the regions,” he indicated.
