Mourning at the Italian Space Agency, President Teodoro Valente has passed away

The Italian Space Agency has announced the premature death of its president, Professor Teodoro Valente, an important figure in the national scientific panorama who led the organization over the last three years. Appointed to the presidency in 2023, Professor Valente has given strategic direction to the Agency in a phase characterized by a significant expansion of Italian space activities, consolidating the country’s role in international collaborations and technological development programs.

Full academician of Materials Science and Technology at the La Sapienza University of Rome, Valente has developed a career marked by profound expertise in the sector of composite materials and nanotechnology, holding leading roles such as the presidency of the National Inter-university Consortium for the Science and Technology of Materials and the direction of the Institute for Polymers, Composites and Biomaterials of the CNR.

Following the event, and in order to guarantee the full institutional and operational continuity of the institution, the leadership of the Italian Space Agency is assumed by the vice-president, the professor and lawyer Elda Turco Bulgherini, in close agreement with the delegated government authority and in compliance with the provisions of the law and statute.

The institution expressed its condolences for the loss of a figure who contributed significantly to the development of scientific research, officially thanking him for the action and commitment made in consolidating the objectives achieved by the Agency in recent years. The formal handover ensures the continuation of the ongoing space programs and the maintenance of the commitments undertaken in the field of research and technological cooperation, confirming the solidity of the organisation’s organizational structure in this transition phase.
