The British Prime Minister gave a farewell speech before leaving office

“I am confident that Britain is stronger and fairer today than it was two years ago,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in his farewell speech outside his office at 10 Downing Street, London today.

Labor Party leader Starmer took office as Prime Minister of the UK on July 5, 2024, succeeding Mr. Rishi Sunak, with a commitment to pursue the process of “calm and patient reconstruction” of the country, calling on all people to join the effort to renew the country.

Mr Starmer today said that over the past two years he had done the job, adding that “I leave happy and proud of all we have achieved”. After the speech, the British Prime Minister will go to Buckingham Palace to present his resignation to King Charles III.

At the final Prime Minister’s Questions session in parliament on July 15, Mr. Starmer defended the achievements of his government, especially the support for Ukraine and achievements in domestic policy.

He mentioned strengthening worker protections, reducing child poverty, increasing defense spending, as well as passing legislation to prevent officials from covering up the truth after disasters.

“I am proud to leave this country in better condition than when I received it,” he said at the time.

Last month, he announced his resignation after mistakes caused his reputation within the Labor Party and the public to decline. The British economy also did not improve during his time in power.

The Labor Party on July 17 elected Andy Burnham as party leader to replace Mr. Starmer. He is the only candidate in the race for the new leadership of the Labor Party, receiving nominations from 379 out of 403 MPs in the House of Commons.

Mr. Burnham will today meet King Charles and receive a proposal to form a new government, officially becoming British Prime Minister.

Mr Burnham will then go to Downing Street and make his first speech as Prime Minister. A spokesman for Mr. Burnham said the new Prime Minister plans to share that he is “very aware” of the rapid leadership changes the country has experienced over the past decade, and is committed to restoring stability.

Burnham, a former mayor of the Manchester metropolitan area, also pledged to improve people’s living standards and “bring back the hope we have lost”. “I will strive to build a new politics. The country is in dire need of that,” he said after becoming leader of the Labor Party on July 17.
