Football: Kevin Keegan has died

Keegan was voted the best player in the world twice in his career (1978 and -79) and is considered one of the best players in English history.

Keegan’s cancer diagnosis was announced in January. The soccer icon’s prognosis was later reported to be grave.

Keegan died on Monday surrounded by his wife and daughters.

“Kevin, a two-time Ballon D’or winner, was a much-loved husband, father and grandfather. The family would like to thank Kevin’s incredible medical team for all their help and support,” Keegan was quoted as saying by Sky.

“This is a really difficult time, and the family is now asking for space and privacy.”

Former the striker and attacking midfielder won three English championships and the European Cup before the Champions League as a player in Liverpool.

In his career, Keegan successfully represented the German Hamburger SV and the English clubs Southampton and Newcastle.

In the English national team, he scored 21 goals in 63 matches.

After his playing career, Keegan coached Newcastle and Manchester City for a long time, as well as the England national team for a year.

“Kevin was more than just a legendary player and coach. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters,” Newcastle wrote on Instagram.

“Today we mourn the loss of a tremendous person in our history and at the right moment we consider” how to honor Kevin’s wonderful life and legacy in perpetuity.
