The law is what prevents the same product from being offered the same in two different regions, as revealed by Mozilla’s ‘Over The Edge 2.0’ report, which highlights that while Copilot’s data switches are activated by default in the United States and India, they appear deactivated in Europe.
A new report on “Microsoft design tactics” looks at whether the tech giant allows users to make modifications to Windows to set the search engine and browser of their choice and how it uses Copilot, its generative AI assistant, and compares it to four regions: the United States, India, the European Economic Area (EEA), and the United Kingdom.
Based on “documented patterns,” the report concludes that “Microsoft still does not allow users to download, default or continue using alternative browsers without harmful interference,” but makes some qualification at the regional level, linked to regulations such as the European Union Digital Markets Law.
Due to this law, Microsoft was forced to make some changes, such as giving users the option in Windows to disable the integrated Bing web search and uninstall the Edge browser to install another of their choice to open content in Windows.
In this regard, the report points out that Bing’s search results over alternative search engines are designed to “dissuade” users from changing options, since under a panel titled ‘Everything you need is here’, it promotes the advantages of Bing in a prominent and large position.
This panel has appeared in searches done in both Windows 10 and Windows 11, although not in all of them, in the United States, India and the United Kingdom. If the operating system is set in the EEA region.
Regarding the configuration of an alternative browser to Edge as the default, Windows does not cause problems, but things change in operation. For example, when opening certain types of files (for example, with pdf and .svg formats), they remained associated with the Microsoft option, and something similar happens when opening links through Windows search. These experiences have not been identified in the EEA.
It has also been detected that, when migrating data from Windows 10 to Windows 11, due to the end of support for the first version, if the user had configured an alternative browser as the default, it was not transferred to the most current version of the operating system, but Edge appeared again as the default. And that happens in all the regions analyzed.
As far as Copilot is concerned, when you ask the AI assistant a question and try to open a web link to the information, in the United States and India it is done in a side panel through Edge, even if another browser is the default. Additionally, Copilot data switches which are on by default in the US and India and off in the EEA and UK.
As the researchers explained, the behaviors they observed in the different regions analyzed “were, at times, notably different.” “In particular, when we configured our test cases for the EEA region, harmful patterns were used less frequently,” they add, although the DMA has not eliminated them completely.
