New stop to trains until July 30th in Florence, the second round of work begins

From today, and until Thursday, those traveling by train in the Florence hub will have to deal with new inconveniences. Italian Railway Network (FS Group) will in fact suspend rail circulation on the Florence Campo di Marte-Florence Rifredi and Florence Campo di Marte-Florence Santa Maria Novella routes, to complete the replacement of the “Ponte al Pino” road overpass. The operations will take place from 11pm on Sunday 26 July to 11am on Thursday 30 July, and will include one of the most complex railway engineering maneuvers carried out in recent years in the Tuscan capital.

During the interruption, the railway offer will be remodulated with a reduction of approximately 50% of the trains scheduled in the Florence hub, according to a plan defined with the railway companies.

Major works, maintenance and technological upgrading.

To allow for the interventions, traffic may be modified on some routes.

A step towards a more functional and future-ready network.

Long-distance trains diverted to the Tyrrhenian Sea

The circulation of long-distance trains will in any case be guaranteed through the Tirrenica line, on which two trains will be routed every hour of the Rome-Milan/Turin relation. For these connections, increases in travel times of up to approximately two hours and thirty minutes are expected, which have already been incorporated into the sales systems.

Four trains will also be insured every hour with origin or destination Florence Santa Maria Novella and connections to Milan, Brescia, Bolzano and Venice, as well as three trains every hour with origin or destination Florence Campo di Marte and connections to Rome, Naples, Salerno, Reggio Calabria, Bari and Taranto.

Replacement buses between the two stations

For some of the connections, a bus service will be active between the stations of Firenze Santa Maria Novella and Firenze Campo di Marte, so as to guarantee the continuity of the journey. In these cases the extension of travel times will be approximately one hour and thirty minutes. All timetable and route changes can be consulted on the sales channels of the railway companies and on the RFI information channels.

The construction site: the replacement of the bridge

After the removal of the previous deck, completed in the first period of work, the new bridge, weighing approximately 550 tonnes, will be installed in a single solution using a 2,000 tonne crane, with a lifting capacity of up to 1,600 tonnes, among the largest used in Europe for this type of intervention. The operations will take place in a highly urbanized context, an element that makes the construction site particularly complex from a technical and organizational point of view. The intervention is part of the program renewal and strengthening of the safety of railway infrastructures and roads of the Florence hub and will allow a completely renewed work to be returned to the city, improving its reliability, durability and safety levels.
