Yéremy Pino is honored in the Canary Islands for his “perseverance” to win the World Cup

The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, led the tribute this Monday to Crystal Palace’s Spanish international Yéremy Pino and highlighted his story of “effort” and “perseverance” to win the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada with ‘La Roja’ in New Jersey on July 19.

In an event accompanied by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training, Physical Activity and Sports of the Canary Islands, Poli Suárez, Fernando Clavijo congratulated Yéremy Pino, brand new world champion with the Spanish team, at a reception that took place at the Gran Canaria headquarters of the Presidency of the Government.

The attacker, a native of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, played an important role in Spain’s second world title, in a championship in which he participated in the victories against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay that certified first place for Luis de La Fuente’s team in the group stage.

The injury suffered against the light blue team reduced his playing time, but did not prevent Pino from lifting the world champion trophy on July 19.

An absolute international since 2021, the current English Crystal Palace winger has thus had a historic season after winning the Conference League with his club in his first year away from Spain. The Gran Canarian adds a new title to his personal record after winning the UEFA Nations League in 2023 and the Europa League in 2021 with Villarreal.

Fernando Clavijo highlighted that “the Canary Islands once again demonstrate that it is a land capable of training top-level athletes.” In this sense, he valued that “having Yéremy Pino and Pedri González among the world champions is a source of pride for all Canarians” and confirms that Canarian football “continues to be a benchmark.”

Likewise, Clavijo expressed his conviction that “his success will awaken the enthusiasm of many boys and girls who today dream of one day wearing the national team’s shirt and who will see, in his example, a demonstration that achieving it is possible.”

For his part, Suárez valued the Gran Canarian international’s “capacity for improvement”, recalling that “just two years ago he had to face a very serious injury that even prevented him from playing in the European Championship.” “He came back stronger, he worked to recover his best level and today he is world champion,” he said.

The counselor wanted to highlight “that story of effort and perseverance, since it is the best message that any athlete can receive.”

Yéremy Pino thanked the Government of the Canary Islands for the recognition and assured that winning the World Cup is “a very great merit” for him and his family, who have always been with him. The Canarian international recalled that he left home when he was only thirteen years old to pursue his dream and stated that this title “reflects all the work behind it.”

Furthermore, he was “super proud to be a Canarian” and to represent the islands “on the biggest stages of football”, while highlighting the honor of being part of the group of Canarian footballers who have marked an era with the Spanish team. “It makes my hair stand on end just thinking about it,” he confessed.

Pino formed, together with Pedri González, the island representation within the squad of the Spanish World Cup team, and thus joins two other illustrious Canarian footballers such as David Silva and Pedro Rodríguez as players from the archipelago who have embroidered a star on the national team’s shirt after the previous title in 2010.

The Canary Islands will be the main protagonist of the next World Cup, which will be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, and which will have Gran Canaria as one of the championship venues. A goal that the two Canarian world champions already have on the horizon.
