Paolo Maldini i Leonardo they left Italian Football Federation only 16 days after they assumed their new functions. According to the Italian media and the respected Fabrizio Romano, the duo decided to leave due to disagreements within the Association regarding the selection of a new coach of the national team. Their departure followed after they were officially appointed on July 11 to positions that were supposed to bring about a new organizational structure and modernization of Italian football.

The new president of the Association, Giovanni Malagò, created the role of technical director for the “Club Italia” project, whose goal was to connect all national teams, improve work with young players and create a clearer identity of the national team. However, the first major problems appeared during the search for a successor to the selectors, after Carlo Ancelotti i Pep Guardiola refused the offers.

It was mentioned as a new solution Andrea Pirlobut his candidacy was soon dropped after information emerged that the former Italian national team player is the ambassador of the Russian bookmaker Fonbet. This connection caused ethical, but also legal doubts, because Italian laws strictly limit the advertising of gambling products.

The situation was further complicated by the disagreement over Pirlo, since Maldini and Leonardo allegedly supported him, while President Malagò was against his appointment. It was precisely because of these differences in attitudes that Maldini and Leonardo decided to resign. Their short mandate in the Alliance thus ends after only 16 days, despiteč months of negotiations that preceded their arrival.
