UNESCO, condominium theaters recognized as world heritage sites

“Italy is a cultural superpower and we will continue to do our part every day to safeguard, protect and enhance a heritage that the whole world envies us. Thanks to all those who believed in this challenge from the beginning and who allowed it to be won”, concludes the prime minister.

“We welcome it with pride and satisfaction the decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to inscribe the condominium theaters of central Italy in the World Heritage List. The recognition celebrates the exceptional universal value of these architectural jewels, which have been, for over two centuries, vital centers of cultural enjoyment, identity and social cohesion for the communities that guard them. The condominium theaters are an Italian cultural infrastructure of excellence, which, in an innovative way, has allowed generations of citizens in the villages and small towns of central Italy to enjoy opera, classical music and other forms of live entertainment”, declares the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, regarding the decision of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee which, during the 48th session held in Busan, South Korea, from 19 to 29 July 2026, inscribed in the World Heritage List ‘The system of Italian-style condominium theaters of the 18th and 19th centuries in central Italy’.

“Their inscription in the World Heritage List rewards the initiative promoted by the president of the Marche Region, Francesco Acquaroli in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, which will support the entire national network of condominium theaters in the valorization process started with the UNESCO candidacy”, he underlines. The new recognition brings the number of Italian sites registered in the UNESCO List to 62consolidating Italy’s lead in terms of number of recognized assets.

The condominium theaters

Italian-style condominium theaters constitute a peculiar phenomenon in the history of architecture and theater understood as a social and cultural institution. Born from the direct participation of citizens, who shared ownership, management and use, they contributed significantly to the development of the cultural and social life of the territories. It is a widespread heritage, made up of buildings of particular elegance and a civic tradition that has made the theater an element of community identity.

The candidacy was promoted by the Marche Region, with the coordination and technical-scientific support of the Ministry of Culture, through the Directorate General for European and International Affairs, UNESCO service. The Regions of Umbria and Emilia-Romagna also participated in the application activities, together with numerous territorial bodies, starting from the Municipalities, and the local realities of central Italy, where this theater system has seen its widest diffusion.

The candidacy also benefited from the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, which oversaw relations with UNESCO. This is the list of registered theaters: Angelo Mariani Theatre, Sant’Agata Feltria; Pergolesi Theatre, Jesi; Ventidio Basso Theatre, Ascoli Piceno; Serpente Aureo Theatre, Offida; L’Aquila Theatre, Fermo; Lauro Rossi Theatre, Macerata; Feronia Theatre, San Severino Marche; Gentile da Fabriano Theatre, Fabriano; Bramante Theatre, Urbania; Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti, Spoleto.
