USA agrees to discuss tariffs with Brazil at the WTO

“The US accepts Brazil’s request to hold consultations. We are available to meet with the representatives of your mission on a mutually convenient date to hold the consultations,” says the document.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 27th that it had contacted the WTO asking for consultations with Washington within the scope of the dispute settlement system.

According to Itamaraty, the measure deals with the two rates applied by the Trump administration against Brasília: the first of 25%, referring to the investigation into Brazilian digital commerce and Pix, and the other of 12.5%, the result of the investigation into forced labor.

China took advantage of the US reaction to request this Monday (10) to join the action on tariffs. In the request, first reported by Folha de São Paulo, Beijing states that it has “substantial commercial interest in these consultations”.

The Chinese delegation told the WTO the measures imposed by the White House “affect all exports from China to the US, except for specified exemptions, and, in particular, the conditions of competition for products originating in China sold in the US market, as a result of the additional tariffs imposed.”

China and Brazil are two countries that have been at the top of the list of tariffs applied by the Trump administration since last year.
