Mitropa shaped rail travel for decades, especially in the GDR. For its 110th anniversary, the Industrial Museum in Chemnitz is now planning an exhibition and is looking for contemporary witnesses and memorabilia. These include tableware, menus, uniforms, photographs, advertising graphics and souvenirs, but also personal reports from former employees, travelers or people who were connected to Mitropa in another way, as one appeal states. The memories can be presented in writing, in a personal conversation or with photographs and documents.
The Central European Sleeping and Dining Car AG – Mitropa for short – was founded on November 24, 1916 and grew over the decades into a group that supplied travelers in Germany and partly Austria and Switzerland. The company operated sleeping and dining cars, station restaurants, hotels and rest stops. After the Second World War and the division of Germany, Mitropa continued to live in the GDR. Therefore, many people there in particular will remember her with her burgundy cars and dishes in the Bauhaus tradition.
Exhibition starts in November
“With the exhibition we not only want to tell the story of a traditional company, but also make visible the memories of the people who experienced this history,” explains curator Anett Polig. “Many of the most beautiful stories are still lying dormant in private photo albums, cupboards or are still being told within the family today.”
