Steam has suffered a data leak that has left exposed up to 12TB of files from the video game distribution platform, which includes content published between the years 2003 y 2013 from own franchises such as Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal 2, and other external ones such as Call of Duty, Fallout and Civilization.
This is a large leak, so everything that could have been exposed is still unknown. However, as has been collected in a compilation on Git-Hub, for the moment, it is content related to internal archives of old titles, both versions beta like games finished.
This has been reported by media such as The Verge and Toms Hardware. Precisely from the latter they have clarified that the leak does not originate from a security breachbut it is expected that the files could have been extracted from a accessible point that Valve left open in its legacy infrastructureso content has only been revealed from between 2003 and 2013, when the company updated its platform from Steam 2 to SteamPipe.
Specifically, as different users who have browsed through the files have shared through social networks, Valve’s own development resources have been found, for example, related to the finally canceled installment of Half-Life 2: Episode 3 and a new concept weapon called ‘Weponizer’.
Content not included in the Portal 2 video game has also been shared and even an unknown version of F-Stop, the title that was going to be a prequel or early version of Portal 2 and that includes camera-centric mechanics to manipulate objects.
Following this line, it has also been leaked Left 4 Dead 2 engine code information. In addition, information has also been found on titles developed by third parties, including initial versions of Call of Duty y de Resident Evil, as well as data from Fallout and Civilization.
It must be taken into account that, for the moment, Valve has not commented on the matter. Therefore, the origin of the leak and what content it has specifically affected is still unknown.
