15 years have passed but the insults uttered by John Galliano in 2011 they still weigh.
The exhibition dedicated to the forty-year career of the famous stylist, for years at the creative pinnacle of Givenchy e Dior, will not be held. It was scheduled to open in spring 2027 Met but it was canceled under the growing weight of protests.
The anti-Semitic insults and the canceled exhibition
The anti-Semitic insults against a couple in a have not been forgotten Paris cafe nor the praise of Adolf Hitler, pronounced – according to the stylist – under the influence of narcotic substances.
“After careful consideration and discussion with the Met and everyone involved, I have decided, with great sadness, that the best thing for the exhibition is for does not take place at this moment”, said Galliano. “I take full responsibility – added the designer – for the pain caused by my past words, in particular for the damage caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I am deeply sorry”.
Julie Menin’s satisfaction
The decision was appreciated by the president of New York City CouncilJulie Menin, of Jewish origin, who said she was “happy” with the revocation of the tribute to Galliano. “From the beginning, I expressed my opinion strong disagreement with this decision, which, at a time of growing anti-Semitism, represented a serious blow to the Jewish community. This is the correct decision, as the harm and suffering it was causing was simply unacceptableili,” he said.
Jonathan Greenblatt’s reflection
Same line held by Jonathan Greenblatt, head ofAnti-Defamation League. “With anti-Semitism at critical levels, the Met’s homage to John Galliano at this time was a mistake, and even Galliano finally recognized what the Met would had to do from the beginning“. “It was the wrong move at the wrong time. Timing is key,” he concluded.
