Installing solar power helps Britons save up to 800 USD per year

Households in sunny places in the UK can save up to £618 ($836) on electricity bills each year if they install solar panels.

According to research by solar power company Recharge Renewable, in sunny places like Brighton and Southampton in the south of England, households can save up to 571 pounds ($770) and 618 pounds ($836) per year, respectively, if they install rooftop solar power.

Meanwhile, in areas with the most clouds and few sunny days, such as southern Scotland, rooftop solar panels can still help a household save an average of about £440 ($600) on electricity bills per year.

“Even in cloudy areas of the UK, a typical 4kW system can still save around £450 per year, under current grid price caps,” said a Recharge Renewable spokesman.

This study does not include battery storage and assumes each household uses 50% of solar power produced during the year. This means households that utilize more solar power can save more.

Savings from rooftop solar power installations have increased in the UK in recent years, as conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East contributed to driving up grid electricity prices. Realizing the benefits, the wave of installing rooftop solar power is also increasing.

Analysis of the sheet Guardian Based on government data, the number of solar power systems installed in the country in the first half of 2026 is a record since 2011. Most of them are recorded on people’s rooftops. These small-scale systems now account for almost a third of the UK’s total solar power capacity.

However, the current barrier is still investment costs. A typical 4 kW solar power system in the UK costs around £7,000 ($9,500), after the government waives VAT. This initial cost is still beyond the reach of many families.

Increased capacity helped solar power meet 14.4% of the UK’s electricity demand in July, a historic record high, after some areas recorded sunshine hours nearly double the average for the same period. Part of the increase in capacity is also due to summer heatwaves, which have been exacerbated by the climate crisis, causing droughts and record temperatures across Europe.
