ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox targeted by EU antitrust

From today, four months will pass, until the end of December 2026, within which the three companies will have to comply with the additional obligations reserved for large platforms and search engines. These include the assessment and mitigation of systemic risks related to the dissemination of illegal content, negative effects on minors, the physical and psychological well-being of users, fundamental rights, electoral processes and public safety.

With the new classification, the Commission acquires broader investigative powers to verify the functioning of these services and related algorithmic systems. Supervision of compliance with the regulation will be shared with the national coordinators of digital services: Coimisiún na Meán, the Irish authority, for ChatGPT and Reddit, and the Authority for Consumer Affairs and Markets (ACM) of the Netherlands for Roblox, due to the registered office of the respective companies.

The three services were already subject to the general obligations under the Digital Services Act for their respective categories. With these new designations, the overall number of large platforms and search engines identified by the Commission rises to 28. Supervision of the application of the Regulation remains shared between the Commission and the national digital services coordinators, responsible for supervision in the Member States.

“These new designations bring ChatGPT, Reddit and Roblox to a higher standard of oversight and accountability in the European Union, in line with their significant impact on citizens and society,” said Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice President for Tech Sovereignty, Security and Democracy. “We continue to closely monitor the digital landscape and will not hesitate to designate any platform that meets the threshold for enhanced oversight under the Digital Services Act.”
