US reopens embassy and consulates in Brazil

“The Trump Administration has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans. The U.S. Embassy and its consulates in Brazil resumed normal operations on Monday, October 5, including consular services,” a State Department spokesperson told People’s Gazette.

“We will continue to proactively and timely provide safety and security information to American citizens in Brazil as we continue to work together with our Brazilian counterparts on security issues,” he added.

Services had been interrupted on Friday (2), due to an alert for security reasons. The motivation was a threat of an attack made on social media.

The measure was replicated by the Australian government, which cited issues of terrorism and the first round of the Brazilian election; The United Kingdom and Canada have issued warnings in this regard.

The Federal Police carried out two search and seizure warrants on Friday related to the case. Over the weekend, the general director of the PF, Andrei Rodrigues, stated that no risks of attacks against embassies in Brasília had been identified.

This Monday, the Australian embassy in Brazil removed the notice about the closure of the diplomatic representation from its website, as well as Smartraveller, the Australian government’s official assistance and guidance service for travelers, linked to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), although this agency has maintained alerts about terrorism, elections and violence in the country.
