Before Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox dominated the console market, there was Atari, the company that popularized the idea of being able to play video games at home. It’s been decades since the company’s peak, but every now and then the brand – which has changed hands several times – returns as a nostalgic treat, this time with a modern-day re-release of one of its classic consoles: the Atari 7800+.
The Atari 7800+, to be released in late 2024, is a faithful recreation of the console that the company put on the market in 1986 as the successor to the Atari 2600 and the Atari 5200, although with modern implementations such as being equipped with HDMI connectors and wireless controllers.
The console also includes the game “Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest”, the sequel to the classic game “Crystal Castle” (1983), and will be launched with new versions of classic games such as “Asteroids”, “Berzerk”, “Space Duel” and “Frenzy”. Likewise, just like the console that gives it its name, the Atari 7800+ is compatible with all the games that were released for the Atari 2600 on the 7800 decades ago, as well as the new titles that came with the Atari 2600+ that was released in 2023.
The console is available for pre-order at a cost of US$129.99 and will come with a game and a controller. Additional controls cost US$34.99 and come in the form of a more modern two-button controller as well as the traditional Atari 2600 joystick.
