Terrafame starts change negotiations, up to 120 jobs are threatened

battery chemical and the multi-metal company Terrafame will start change negotiations for all its personnel, according to its press release, for production and financial reasons.

According to the company’s preliminary estimate, the need to reduce the workforce would be a maximum of 120 person-years. The goal is annual savings of at least 10 million euros.

At the end of December, Terrafame employed 887 people, which is more than a tenth of the company’s employees.

In the negotiations, provisions are also made for furloughs of up to 90 days, changes in duties and changes in working time arrangements, the company informs. Other measures can also be considered, such as expanding local bargaining.

The state owns more than half of Terrafame through the state company Finnish Minerals Group.

chemical industry and its industry association Kemianteollisuus sent a press release in connection with the change negotiations, in which it criticized the government’s actions in relation to the mining and battery industries.

“The government program promises to promote the growth of the domestic mineral and battery cluster as part of a clean transition and the strengthening of Europe’s strategic autonomy. However, the decisions made now take the goals in the opposite direction,” says the leading expert of the Kemianteollisuus ry and CEO of the Akkuteollisuus ry Pious Vilenius in the bulletin.

In December 2025, the Parliament approved the quadrupling of the mineral tax. In addition to this, the mines were moved out of the reduced electricity tax category and it has been decided to end the electrification subsidy for energy-intensive industries.

The message to industry and investors is contradictory, says Vilenius.

“We can’t do anything about world market prices here in Finland, but we can about mining tax, electricity tax categories and support for electrification.”
