Türkiye bans social media for children under 15

The Turkish Parliament approved on Wednesday, April 22, a law banning the use of social networks for children under 15 years of age. For children from 15 to 18 years old, social networks must provide a separate safe environment, isolated from adult content.

Parents will be able to change their children’s account settings. Minors will be able to carry out all paid operations only after confirmation by their parents. In emergency situations, platforms are required to intervene within an hour of malicious content appearing.

After parliamentary approval, the law was submitted to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for signature and will come into force six months after publication in the government gazette.

Australia was the first country to ban teenagers’ access to social networks. France is also close to introducing a ban as early as 2026. Greece, Denmark and the UK are promoting similar initiatives.
