Ho Chi Minh City blocked 8 tons of pork and poultry without quarantine

A report from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine sent to the Department of Agriculture and Environment said that from March until now, interdisciplinary forces have inspected 25 times on bordering national highways, handling 18 cases of violations related to transporting animals without quarantine papers, of unknown origin and illegal slaughter.

The destroyed exhibits included about 8 tons of animals, animal products and by-products of all kinds, including pork, chicken, dogs, cats, dog meat and dog entrails in violation of veterinary hygiene conditions.

The main violations include transporting animals without quarantine certificates, slaughtering at unlicensed locations or not ensuring veterinary hygiene conditions.

On May 14-15 alone, many trucks carrying unquarantined pork, chicken intestines and poultry continued to be blocked at Ho Chi Minh City gateways, with a total volume of nearly 7 tons.

In Bang Lang hamlet, Tru Van Tho commune, the inspection team discovered 4 shipments with more than 1,860 chickens and ducks, with a total weight of about 5.5 tons, on their way to Ho Chi Minh City for consumption but without quarantine certificates and origin traceability records.

On Highway 1 and Nguyen Van Linh Street, the authorities continued to detect two trucks transporting nearly 190 kg of chicken intestines and nearly 500 kg of pork from provinces to Ho Chi Minh City without quarantine documents or origin.

On the morning of May 15, the inspection team discovered a spontaneous pig slaughter point along Rong Tung canal, Thoi An ward that was slaughtering 4 pigs with a total weight of about 500 kg but without an operating license and quarantine certificate.

According to records, the slaughter area does not ensure veterinary hygiene conditions, posing a potential risk of food insecurity and disease spread. All exhibits have been recorded and handled according to regulations.

Talk to VnExpressMr. Tran Phu Cuong, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, said that recently, almost every week, the authorities have discovered cases of transporting animals and animal products in violation of quarantine regulations.

“Shipments shipped in large quantities without ensuring quarantine records pose a potential risk of spreading diseases, affecting food safety and consumer health. Therefore, cases of violation must be strictly handled,” Mr. Cuong said.

According to him, the unit will continue to increase unexpected inspections at gateway routes, bordering areas and night transport activities to prevent goods that have not passed quarantine from entering the consumer market.
