Job: HVAC technician, a future career between comfort and decarbonization

Recruited by Dalkia through co-optation 3 years ago, Mohamed-Rayane Dehmani is today assigned to a large university site in the south of Île-de-France as an operations technician. “In the morning, my day begins with a tour of the site counters. Thanks to a technical building management system, anomalies can be detected at a glance. Overconsumption of electricity, a water leak… I also do a technical round. This time, I visually inspect the installations,” he testifies. An anomaly? It was immediately reported and this young holder of a professional baccalaureate in electricity “rectified the situation” with his colleagues. In addition to the diversity of the missions of his role as HVAC technician (Heating, ventilation, air conditioning), he appreciates decarbonizing as much as possible the planet that he will leave to his daughter. And Mohamed-Rayane Dehmani and his counterparts are not about to find themselves unemployed. On the contrary. “Today heat represents 40% of energy consumption in France. And two thirds of this heat is produced from fossil fuels. The multi-year energy program published in February 2026 plans to double the share of renewable heat to reach 56% in 2035. If we add to this the rise in gas prices, particularly with the various geopolitical crises, we understand better that heat decarbonization projects are increasing,” explains Marion Lettry, general delegate of Fedene (professional federation of service companies for energy and the environment). With the various past and future heat waves, there is also an urgent need to install cooling systems within buildings.
