New York City Council approves rent freeze promised by Mamdani

New York City’s Rent Standards Board voted to freeze rents on nearly a million rent-controlled apartments, fulfilling one of Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s key campaign promises.

The freeze is approved for both one- and two-year leases and covers more than 40% of all apartments in the city’s five boroughs.

The freeze will apply to leases beginning on or after 1 October.

The resolution was approved by a vote of 7 to 1. Another council member announced her resignation before the vote, saying the outcome of the vote was a foregone conclusion. Six of the 9 commission members were appointed by Mamdani.
