Meta considers entry into cloud computing

Meta, the group led by Mark Zuckerberg is preparing to launch a service cloud computing intended for external customers. The indiscretion comes from Bloomberg which explains how the ever-growing sector is an old obsession of the creator of Facebook. The acceleration of the development ofartificial intelligence, moreover, it has caused a surge in demand for computing capacity, supplied mainly through large data centers, accelerating interest in the sector.

To support the development of its AI models, Meta has invested massively in these infrastructures, including starting the construction of a giant data center in Mississippia project with an estimated value of 10 billion dollars. The company also develops proprietary chips in collaboration with Broadcom and expects total investments of between $125 and $145 billion over the course of the year.

Meta’s possible entry into cloud computing

According to Bloomberg, the company Menlo Park is considering making unused excess computing capacity available to third-party companies for its artificial intelligence systems.

Meta is developing plans for a cloud infrastructure business that will sell access to AI computing power and models, setting up a new vector of competition with industry leaders like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud https://t.co/n5jvAHHxFX

Zuckerberg’s words

Already at the end of May, during the shareholders’ meeting, CEO Mark Zuckerberg had indicated that the hypothesis of entering the cloud computing market was “clearly under consideration”. “Practically every week some companies ask us if we can make an AI platform available or buy computing capacity from us at a price higher than our cost”, Zuckerberg explained, specifying however that, at present, Meta uses all available computing power. “If we were to get to a point where we felt we had built excess capacity, that would be an option,” he added.

Amazon’s model and SpaceX’s precedent

The offer could concern both the simple supply of computing power and a more complex platform, on the model of Amazon Web Services (AWS)Amazon’s cloud division and world leader in the sector.

With this move Meta would follow a strategy already adopted by SpaceXwhich recently began leasing some of its data center capacity to other AI operators, including Anthropic, Google e Reflection AI. A new activity capable of immediately generating liquidity could also reassure investors, worried by the size of the resources that Meta has placed and foreseen for artificial intelligence.

The issue of excess computing capacity is already at the center of debate in the artificial intelligence infrastructure sector. CoreWeavea leading “neocloud” provider specializing in GPUs for AI, has signed with Nvidia a $6.3 billion deal in which the chipmaker agrees to buy any of the company’s remaining, unsold cloud capacity, a sort of guarantee against the risk of overcapacity. Oracleon the contrary, is rapidly expanding its cloud infrastructure, because the demand for computing for training and inferring AI models still exceeds available supply, according to several industry players.
