The Soccer World Cup and the support package from President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government accelerated sales in the domestic market and the export of heavy vehicles in June 2026, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) and industry representatives reported yesterday.
In the Administrative Registry of the Heavy Vehicle Automotive Industry, in the sixth month of the year, retail sales in this sector amounted to 3,194 units, an increase of 3.9 percent compared to the same period in 2025. The advance contrasts with the decreases observed in 2024 and 2025, although it is 23.3 percent below June 2019.
Cristina Vázquez, coordinator of economic studies of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), stated in a conference that the total growth of the industry is due to the cargo segment, which sold 2,796 units, an increase of 14.97 percent.
Wholesale sales were 3,278 units, an annual increase of 45.5 percent. The production of heavy vehicles was 15,262 in the reference month, which meant an advance of 7.6 percent compared to June 2025. Exports of this type of units stood at 12,730,000, an increase of 3.2 percent annually.
Rogelio Arzate Tapia, executive president of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor Producers, acknowledged that a small recovery was observed in the United States market.
He stressed that the improvement in the industry’s performance is attributed to the sales generated by the World Cup, since many of its associates marketed passenger vehicles, such as in Guadalajara to transport tourists from the airport to the center of the capital of Jalisco. Arzate Tapia maintained that the accelerated depreciation as part of Plan Mexico, announced by the federal government, also explains this dynamism, to the extent that it is estimated that half of the 2 billion pesos allocated has been used. He specified that the Secretariats of Finance and Economy have approved various projects.
He recalled that the immediate tax deduction when acquiring a new unit is normally made in four years, but with the announced measures it is accelerated and completed in one year. He stressed that this fiscally benefits purchasers of heavy vehicles, both for cargo and passengers.
Guillermo Rosales Zárate, executive president of AMDA, commented that the 3.9 percent growth is favorable, since it is the first positive monthly result in the recent 18 months.
In the accumulated first half of the year, the industry sold 16,072 units at retail, which represents a drop of 21.80 percent compared to the same period in 2025. Rosales Zárate is confident that in the second half of 2026 the positive impact of the federal government’s modernization program and the need for fleet renewal of transportation companies will be observed.
