NETA asks for permission to directly hire 23,500 foreign workers for metro construction

NETA and the contractors of the Gush Dan metro project are seeking permission to directly hire about 23,500 foreign specialists needed to carry out construction work, Calcalist writes.

Currently, the employment of foreign workers is carried out through specialized recruitment corporations. NETA and contractors say direct hiring will speed up recruitment, reduce dependence on middlemen and avoid delays in the country’s largest infrastructure project.

Recruitment companies and the Histadrut are opposed to changing the current system. They insist that the current mechanism provides more effective control over employment conditions and better protects the rights of foreign workers.

The dispute could affect the pace of subway construction. Completion of the project, which should link the main cities of Gush Dan, is scheduled for 2037.
