La Jornada: Sales in self-service stores decreased

The value of comparable sales, which includes data from establishments with more than a year of operation, from the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (Antad) fell 1.6 percent in nominal terms (without discounting inflation) in June 2026 compared to the same month in 2025.

The monthly report of the private organization explains the decline due to a calendar effect, derived from one fewer Sunday compared to June 2025, as well as the impact of the 2026 World Cup, which temporarily modified consumption habits.

The value of total sales in June, including establishments that opened in the recent 12 months, rose 0.6 percent compared to the same month in 2025.

Self-service stores had a drop of 2.7 percent for same stores and 0.5 percent for total stores; Meanwhile, department stores reported 3.7 percent less for same stores and 2.6 for total stores. The specialized stores segment grew nominally 3.1 percent annually for same stores and 6.6 percent for total stores.

The accumulated increase, from January to June 2026, for same stores was 1.5 percent, while for total stores 3.7 percent.

Sales in June amounted to 138,400 million pesos, and those accumulated as of the sixth month of 2026 are 814 billion.

Relevant indicator

The figures are one of the main indicators of consumption behavior in Mexico, one of the engines of the economy.

Among its members are La Comer, Soriana, Chedraui, Liverpool, El Palacio de Hierro, Coppel, Sears and Sanborns stores.

The figures show a decline compared to what was reported in April, when sales growth was 0.8 percent in the same stores and 3 percent in total; and even more so compared to April, when they were 4.4 and 6.7 percent, at an annual rate, respectively. The weakness in sales partially contrasts with the Consumer Confidence Indicator, which rose 0.4 points during June.
